Covered Bridge
Brodhead is the southern
entrance to the 23 mile bike trail
that leads to New Glarus. One of
the many delights along the trail
is the National Award Winning
Clarence Covered Bridge replica
constructed by the
Brodhead
Jaycees.
The original covered bridge was located just south of Brodhead on
Highway 11-81 and spanned the Sugar River. The bridge survived until
1931 when a 30 ton trailer truck crashed through the floor.

The memory of the "Clarence Bridge" remains real as the Brodhead
Jaycees, The Department of Natural Resources and the people of the
community completed a replica of the original bridge in the fall of 1984.

The 112 foot structure is located at the first railroad trestle north of Golf
Course Road on the bike trail.  The DNR provided the wood from old
barns and other buildings that were demolished elsewhere in the state
and the Jaycees raised money for the rest of the materials.

The Sugar River Bike Trail and the "Clarence Bridge" are enjoyed by
many hikers, bikers, and snowmobilers each year.

Directions: The bridge is two and one-half miles north of Brodhead.  By
car take First Center Avenue north to County E, take County E north
1.7 miles to Golf Course Road, turn left and go three tenths of a mile to
the intersection of the trail. Park car. Walk to the right one-quarter mile
to the bridge.
Sugar River State Trail
The Sugar River Trail offers a peaceful trek
along a former railroad bed. From Brodhead,
the trail leads to New Glarus. People may
hike or bike on the trail, stopping periodically
to enjoy a covered bridge, streams and lakes.

For those who enjoy seeing animals, there are
farm animals grazing in pastures, birds
singing, rabbits, squirrel's, deer and an
occasional beaver.
The tree canopies along the trail help people lose track of time, to slow down
and just commune with nature.

22 miles including the on-street segment in Brodhead.

The trailhead location in Brodhead is on the corner of Exchange Street and
West 3rd Avenue, two blocks West of Hwy 11 (1st Center Avenue).

Daily or annual state trail passes are available for ages 16 and over and can
be purchased at the Brodhead Police Department, across the street from the
trailhead.
